Agafay is a stone desert about an hour from Marrakech, with the High Atlas on the horizon and almost no sand dunes. A day trip gives you the sunset, which is what Agafay does best, and a dinner. An overnight stay gives you the stars and a slower evening. If you came to Morocco for tall golden dunes, this is not where you will find them, and it is better to know that before you book.

How far is the Agafay desert from Marrakech?
Roughly 30 to 35 kilometres south-west of the city. Most camps are reached by the Route d’Amizmiz, and the drive takes between 40 and 60 minutes depending on traffic and which camp you choose. That is why it works so well as a short escape: you can leave after lunch and be back in the medina the same night.
Is Agafay a real desert, and how is it different from the Sahara?
It is a real desert, just not the postcard kind. Agafay is a stone desert: flat and rolling rocky ground with low scrub, and the Atlas Mountains standing behind it. The light is warm and the horizon is wide, but the ground is stone, not sand.
The big dunes are in the Sahara, at Erg Chebbi near Merzouga or at Erg Chigaga. Those need time, at least three days from Marrakech if you want to enjoy the trip and not only the drive. We compare the options in Sahara Desert Tour from Marrakech: 3 vs 4 vs 5 days.
What do you actually do there?
Most camps offer a short camel ride, usually 20 to 30 minutes, plus quad biking, a walk at sunset and a Moroccan dinner such as tagine or couscous served in a tent. Some have a pool, and some offer massages or hammam-style treatments.
Quality varies a lot from camp to camp. Quad bikes in particular range from well kept to tired, so ask what the camp uses and how long the ride lasts before you agree to anything. Stargazing is good, but not as dark as in the Sahara, because the lights of Marrakech are not far away.
Why go at sunset?
Sunset is what Agafay does best, and it is the best one we know. The ground is open in every direction, so nothing stands between you and the horizon while the light changes. Arrive early enough to find a good spot before the sun drops.
Day trip or overnight?
Choose a day trip if you have one free afternoon. Leave in the afternoon so you arrive before sunset, eat, watch the stars for a while and drive back. It suits the day after a few busy ones in the medina, because most of it is sitting, looking and eating.
Choose an overnight stay if you want the stars and a quiet morning. You also skip the drive back in the dark, and the desert is at its best early, when the light is soft and the camp is calm. Two days is the pace most people find ideal.
When is the best time to go?
Spring, from March to May, is the easiest season, with daytime temperatures around 20 to 30°C. Autumn is close behind, at roughly 22 to 32°C. In summer the days reach 32 to 42°C. That is pool weather: camps with a pool make the hot afternoon easy, and sunset is when you head out into the desert. In winter the days are mild, around 15 to 22°C, but the nights are cold.

What should you bring?
Sunscreen, a hat, water, a scarf, and shoes you can walk in on stony ground. In winter add a thermal base layer, a fleece, a hat and socks you can sleep in.
Agafay or the Sahara?
Pick Agafay if you have one or two days, want an easy evening, or are travelling with someone who dislikes long drives. Pick the Sahara if the dunes are the point, and give it three days at the very least. Many travellers do both, with Agafay at the start of a trip to settle in and the Sahara later, when there is time to do it properly.
Planning Agafay with us
Our Marrakech and Agafay tour is a 5-day private trip built around Marrakech and the Agafay stone desert. Like every trip we plan, it is a starting point, not a fixed package. Tell us what you love, how much you want to do each day and when you are travelling, and we will draft a route for free and change it until it feels right.
